The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
